Frequently asked questions
Answers to some of the questions you might have.
General
Do I need to have an active license before I start working?
License requirements vary based on the district and state. In some instances, it may be possible to start with pending licenses and certifications. Your recruiter will explain the requirements for the job you're interested in.
Am I under any obligation after I apply with Aya?
Not at all. Who you choose to work with is a big decision. What’s most important is that you feel comfortable with the agency representing you during your job search and supporting you throughout your career.
How long are the contracts?
The length of your contract is dependent on your start date but typically end on the last day of the school year. Your contract can span an entire 42-week school year, or you can sign on mid-year through the last day of school. Your recruiter can walk you through your available options.
What happens after my contract ends?
Once your contract concludes, you have three available options:
- You can choose to extend your contract with the same district for the next school year.
- If you're fond of the school and wish to make a long-term commitment, we offer a contract-to-permanent option.
- Should you decide not to continue with your current school, we can assist you in securing an assignment in another district. Opting for this will not give the impression that you're frequently changing jobs between schools.
What types of positions does Aya Education offer?
We offer flexible employment options to help meet your personal and professional goals, including contracting, direct placement, contract-to-permanent and tele-services.
Travel
What exactly is a travel or agency educator, and how does it differ from being a district employee?
A travel or agency school-based professional works on a temporary or contract basis in partnership with a school or district. The day-to-day work of supporting students, collaborating with staff and following district expectations is very similar to a district employee. The main difference is that Aya Education is your employer, which allows us to support you with placement coordination, pay and benefits, while the district focuses on the learning environment and student success.
Will working through an agency hurt my chances of getting hired by a district later?
Many districts view agency work as valuable experience, especially when it demonstrates your adaptability, strong classroom skills and collaboration across different settings. Agency roles can also help you build relationships and gain experience in districts where you may want to work long term.
How does licensure work when I'm working in different states or districts?
School-based professionals must meet the licensure requirements of each state and district for the role they work in. Your Aya Education recruiter will help you understand requirements, timelines and documentation needed for any assignment you’re interested in.
What happens to my benefits like health insurance, retirement and time off when I work through an agency like Aya Education?
Benefits are provided through Aya Education, rather than the school district. We offer comprehensive medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as life insurance. Plus, we offer a generous 401(k) match (when eligible).
What kind of support does Aya Education provide during my assignment if things come up?
We’re here to support you throughout your assignment and career. You’ll have a dedicated team to help with onboarding, credentialing, assignment logistics and any questions that come up along the way. Our goal is to remove unnecessary stress so you can focus on your work with students and your collaboration with the school team.
Can agency work support a long-term career path?
Many school-based professionals use agency work as part of a longer-term career strategy, whether that means gaining experience in different districts, maintaining flexibility or exploring new opportunities. Your career path is personal, and agency work can be one of several ways to support it.
Can agency experience help me grow in my career?
Working in different schools and districts can help you build new skills, broaden your perspective and strengthen your professional confidence. Many school-based professionals find that this experience helps them grow by exposing them to a variety of classrooms, teams and instructional approaches.
How does professional development work? Will I have access to training and growth opportunities?
Professional development opportunities can vary by assignment. Some districts include agency educators in on-site training, and Aya Education offers unlimited CEUs for some school-based professionals.
What if I love a placement and want to stay longer or even convert to a permanent position with the district?
If you’re interested in extending your assignment or exploring a permanent role, we can help facilitate those conversations. It all depends on district needs and timing, but we’re committed to supporting outcomes that work for you and the school community.
How long are typical travel or agency assignments in education?
Assignments vary, but many last a semester or a full school year. Some roles are shorter-term, while others may offer opportunities for extension depending on district needs and mutual fit.
Pay and Benefits
What pay and benefits does Aya Education offer?
Pay and benefits vary between travel and local contract positions. Your recruiter will explain all the details of your unique package to ensure you choose the job that best meets your personal and professional goals. If applicable, you get benefits such as:
- Paid company housing (pets are welcome to tag along) or a generous housing stipend.
- Premium medical, dental, vision and life insurance beginning day one of your assignment, with the option for continued insurance coverage over the summer.
- Generous 401k match.
- Paid sick time. Aya provides paid sick leave in accordance with all applicable state, federal, and local laws. Aya’s general sick leave policy is that employees accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. However, to the extent any provisions of the statement above conflict with any applicable paid sick leave laws, the applicable paid sick leave laws are controlling.
- Licensure, relocation and other reimbursements.
How do I get paid?
You’ll be paid weekly via direct deposit each Friday. For local contracts, the pay is all hourly. Local contracts aren’t eligible for additional stipends for travel or housing. Travelers may be eligible for additional housing, meal and incidental stipends. Your recruiter will provide more information.
Job Preparation
How can I highlight my specialized experience and training on my resume?
The best way to make your application stand out is through tailoring your resume to highlight the niche certifications or experience you have. Include references to projects you led, initiatives you started or trainings you facilitated in prior roles. Be sure to spotlight any transferrable skills and subject matter expertise.
What interview questions should I prepare for?
Common questions asked in school interviews relate to your experience, approach to instruction and personalized treatment plans, classroom management strategies, how you support diverse learners and your overall instructional outlook. It’s a good idea to prepare specific examples that demonstrate your experience and how you’ve applied your skills.
Housing
Does Aya Education offer housing, and can I get assistance with my search?
Depending on your assignment details, you may be eligible for Aya-offered housing. Another option many travelers find preferrable is the housing stipend (if eligible) that offers you the freedom to find housing on your own.
