How long are school-based PT contracts through Aya Education?

School PT jobs range from mid- to full-year contracts. Full-year contracts last the entire academic year, while mid-year contracts are booked throughout the year and typically end at the start of summer break. Some schools may offer shorter 13-week assignments for instances such as leaves of absence. To have the most job availability, it’s ideal to apply in late spring or early summer when school districts begin hiring for the new school year. Your recruiter will go over all the options that are available when you apply.

What options do I have when my school PT contract ends?

When the school year ends, you have options for what you want to do next. If eligible, you can choose to:

  • Extend at your current school: If your school has a continuing need and you want to stay, you can talk to your recruiter about extending your contract for the next school year.
  • Transition to a permanent role: If you love your school and want to make a long-term commitment, you may have the opportunity to get direct employment with the district. Through Aya’s contract-to-permanent option, you’ll have a seamless transition to a permanent role at your school.
  • Book a new assignment: If you’re looking to share your expertise with a new school, your recruiter will help you find a role to meet your personal and professional goals.

Your recruiter will reach out before your current contract ends to make sure you’re set up for what comes next. Whether you want to extend, go permanent or find another great opportunity, we’ll help make the transition as smooth as possible!

What is the interview process for school physical therapy jobs, and how should I prepare?

After your recruiter submits you for a school PT job, the district will likely ask to schedule a virtual interview. Your recruiter will send you a prep sheet and advise you on what kind of questions might be asked. Common school PT interview topics may include:

  • Previous experience: You’ll likely be asked to discuss your PT experience, with a focus on pediatric or school-based therapy. If applicable, you should prepare a few specific examples of your treatment of children and teens that highlight your skills. If you’re a new graduate, you can focus on internships or relevant volunteer experience.
  • Approach to therapy: The district will want to learn about your approach to developing and implementing student treatment plans. You may be asked questions about how you will assess students’ needs and integrate IEP goals into your treatment plans.
  • Adaptability: Districts know that every school and student is different and will want to assess your ability to adapt to individual students’ needs and difficult situations. They’ll also want to know if you have experience collaborating with teachers, other therapists and parents to create a comprehensive treatment plan for each student.

Remember to utilize your recruiter to help you prep for the interview. It’s a good idea to prepare a few concrete examples that demonstrate how you apply specific skills. Your recruiter will make sure you feel confident going into the interview and help you to come up with questions to ask the interviewer to get insight on if the school is a good fit.
